Guest Author Day with Pat Brown

New writers studiously study how-to articles online, in writer's magazines and in the hundreds of books published on how to write in the belief that there is some secret that all published writers know and if only they could find it, they'd be published too. I'm afraid it's not true. There is no magic wand that can transform you from unpublished to published. The process is the same for everybody, for some it's just longer than others. Even when the dream is realized, it's not the end. You publish one book, one short story or perhaps an article, the next one is not a shoe-in. You might get more consideration for having been published, but you can just as easily be rejected again for your latest work.

It took me 33 years between the first book I wrote at 17 to having my first book published when I was 50. In that time I wrote at least 8 novels that were not published, in some cases probably weren't publishable. But each one was a learning experience I built on until I produced a book that someone wanted. But after that there was more rejection. The second book in the L.A. series was rejected and I ended up taking it elsewhere, to a small, independent publisher, which was a step down from the New York publisher I had started with. I'm still glad to be published by them and have continued with them since then. But I still want to break back into the New York publishing world and I've been pursuing an agent for the last year. So far I have over 250 rejections on two books I've queried. That's 250+ times I've had to read 'Sorry, not for us' since most of the rejections have been form letters. A few have been requests for fulls or partials, most of which also resulted in rejections.

Those statistics would make it easy to give up, right? But I’m stubborn and my persistence paid off. On November 11 I sent my last query to the Literary Group International – since they wanted a 30 day exclusive, I save them till last – and on November 12 I received an email saying the query intrigued them and they wanted to see the full. I sent it the same day and like most of my other queries I forgot about it by burying myself in new writing and editing. That’s what will kill you the fastest in the querying game – if you keep waiting for a response and constantly checking your email or phone to see if it’s on, you’ll drive yourself crazy. It’s better to get busy with something else and try to forget. Which by this time I was pretty good at doing. I was already thinking ahead to the new year when I would start submitting the novel to editors. So when I got the email in December I didn’t know what it was at first. Most of my queries come back as replies, so they have the subject that says; Query: Shadows and Smoke so I know right away it’s a response. This one didn’t. This one came in with the subject line: Fantastic Book. I opened it thinking it was a fan telling me they’d loved a particular book of mine. I get them sometimes. But the minute I opened it and saw the book title I was confused. This was in regard to Shadows and Smoke. I tried to remember the beta readers I had sent it to, but there were only 2 and this didn’t come from either of them, so what was going on?

Then I looked more closely at the sender and at the rest of the email. It was from the President of LGI and he loved the book. He wanted to represent it. I read the whole email and frankly, I was a little dazed. I shut the email down and went back to look over the rest of my emails. Then I went back and read it again. I did this a few times – I actually got up and walked around a bit then came back and read it again. It took probably a good 10 minutes for it to sink in. Even then I felt like I was walking around in a daze.

I was very lucky. The email came in late in the day so I knew the agency would be closed and it was a Friday so they wouldn’t be open until Monday. I spent the entire weekend researching the agency with every resource I could find, including talking to a couple of their client authors, both of who said they were great to work with. So on Monday I sent in my reply and said I’d love to have them represent me. On Tuesday they email the contract to me and I read it through carefully (it was very short and straightforward) and mailed it back.

Now we’re getting into the Christmas season so I don’t expect much. I had a couple of emails from one of the agents who had a couple of questions about the manuscript and we worked on that. I received the signed contract back and now it’s just waiting to see what happens next.

But am I waiting around? No, I’ve already started a new historical novel set in New York in the late 1800s so I’m busy researching and writing and don’t allow myself much time to think about what’s happening now.

My point in all this is, though I have 11 fiction novels published, 2 more at the publisher waiting to be published, and several short stories, I am no more guaranteed the next book I write will be published by anyone. Publishing is a business going through a lot of changes right now, and no one knows where it will be in 5 years, let alone 20.

So why do it despite all the rejections? I do it because I can't NOT write. Whether or not I get published I will always write because the stories are in me and have to be told. With that compulsion I will keep writing no matter if the next book or the one after that is never published or I decide to self publish an ebook, I will write.

As a new writer, only you can decide if this path is for you. No one else can make that decision or stop you from trying. If you want to write, despite the odds, then I say go, write.

My motto is taken right out of Galaxy Quest -- 'Never give up, never surrender'

Guest Author Day with Susan Hanniford Crowley/CONTEST

CONTEST ANNOUNCEMENT IS AT END OF POST. PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO SEE HOW TO ENTER. CONTEST OPEN TO INTERNATIONAL READERS AND WILL CLOSE ON MONDAY DECEMBER 6TH, 2010.
Vampires at Christmas
By Susan Hanniford Crowley

At this time of year, when the winter holidays are upon us, everyone wants to hang with friends or family.  Since I was visiting Manhattan, I had to drop in on my favorite vampires in the Arnhem Society.  It gave me a chance to do a little impromptu interview with Vampire David Hilliard.  (Note: The Vampires in Manhantan refer to me as Lily A. Snow.)

Susan:  David, what's your favorite thing to do this time of year?

David:  Ice skating at Rockefeller Center beats everything.  Laura and I really love that.

Susan:  What's your favorite holiday food?

David:  You're going to laugh.

Susan:  No, I won't.  I promise.

David:  Gingerbread men.

Susan:  (repressing a giggle)  I will have to make you some.

David:   Unfortunately, I won't be able to eat them.  I promised Laura that I wouldn't eat until she could.

Susan:   When will that be?

David:  In about 95 years.

Laura (comes over and sits on his lap):  I'm not going to let you wait that long for gingerbread.  If Lily brings you gingerbread men, then you can eat them.

David (kisses her):  Lily, hold onto your lifemate with both hands, because finding true love makes every second of existence pure ecstasy.

Laura (kisses him):  Let's go ice skating.  (Her fangs are showing and she rubs them against his shoulder.  When a female vampire does that, she wants a lot more than ice skating.)

David (laughs):  Lily is getting to know us too well.

I think this is a good time to announce my contest.  In celebration of the holidays, I'm giving away a PDF ebook of either WHEN LOVE SURVIVES, THE LOVE LIFE OF LAURA CORDELAIS, or A VAMPIRE FOR CHRISTMAS to the lucky winner, who will be randomly drawn from those with the correct answer to this question.

Who is the vampire who pulled Laura Cordelais out of the river?

Hint:  Visit my website to find the answer.  http://www.susanhannifordcrowley.com

Good luck, everyone.  The deadline for the contest is midnight EST on ___________________________.

Thanks, Dawn.  Have a fun holiday!  A last special note:  I will be running a contest in January for my newsletter subscribers.  If anyone is interested in getting my confidential, and once in a while newsletter, please, email me with Newsletter in the subject.

Getting know Frances Pauli

Why don't you start with telling us a little about yourself? What genre do you write in and why?

Okay, I write Speculative Romance and some speculative short stories that have no romance in them. I love both science fiction and fantasy romance and am currently finishing the last installment in my Urban Fantasy trilogy, The Changeling Race.

What comes first for you when you sit down to write a book? Plot or Characters?

It’s almost always the characters. I get this idea or thought about an oddball character and the story just springs from that original seed. Sometimes the character doesn’t even end up as the protagonist, but the ideas all come from that thought. I like quirky, unusual combination's, and they seem to lead to plot formation.

Do you "cast" your characters using pictures or actors to help inspire you when you're writing?

Not usually. I can’t swear that I’ve never envisioned one of my heroes as someone famous, but I like to deny it. Usually my cast is just oddball enough that you’d be hard pressed to find them in the real world. I have some autobiographical heroines, who doesn’t? But I try to give each character their own, individual identity.

How long does it take you to finish a book from start to finish?

Most of the year it takes about six months for a novel and one to three for a novella. During November it takes 30 days for a novel, and I like to do at least one that way each year. (for NaNoWriMo)

What are you working on now?

I am currently writing the final book in my Changeling Race trilogy. The first one, Moth in Darkness, is due out from Mundania Press early next year. This final chapter has been a lot of fun and a great learning experience. I’ve never had to finish up a series before. There are a lot of ends to tie up nicely.

If there was a soundtrack to your latest novel, what genre/songs would be included?

Oh that’s a fun one! If it was the one Im writing now, I’d have to say a lot of alternative, Alanis style songs. Maybe even some space music, Enigma, Enya, Loreena McKennit. (the series crosses between the modern world and Fey).  For Dimensional shift, I’d pick some They Might Be Giants or other such brilliant silliness.

Which of your characters would you most likely fall for if they were real?

Lockland, the elf hero in my Urban Fantasy. He was the first hero I wrote and he very much embodies my own fantasies. Plus, I just can’t resist that long, white hair!

What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as Kindle 2 or Sony Digital Book Reader to the environment?

Don’t get me started there! I adore e-books and I’ve switched almost entirely to reading electronically. I know all the arguments and such, but you really do learn to love the sensual feel of the reader too, the weight, the little click click of the buttons. Ahhh. And yes, the trees for heavens sake, the unbelievable waste of millions of books that are returned and destroyed in the print business. All that can be avoided by reading E. Also, I’ve eliminated a huge amount of clutter  in my home, and I can carry hundreds of books in my purse.

What character (s) in any of your books is most like you?

I’d have to say Stevie Roth from my Dimensional Shift sequel, Aspect Ratio. She’s a mess, but a lot of fun. Both Chloe (from book one) and Stevie are partly autobiographical, and the best part is, they can’t stand one another. It just worked out that way, and I ran with it, cackling the whole way.

What is the most ridiculous thing that you have thought about doing to any of your characters but never did?

If it’s ridiculous, I probably did it. Let me think. Chloe (Dimensional Shift) battles a giant, glow-in-the-dark bedbug in book two. That’s pretty out there. I have given my characters addictions, tortured them, killed off friends and family, lost them, sent them to unknown dimensions…but I have a great deal of trouble with the idea of ever splitting up a pairing once I’ve made it.
There’s my answer, I’d never have them cheat or kill off a main love interest. I’m too much of a happily ever after junkie.

What is your favorite Ice Cream flavor?

All of them. Hmmm. I’m a big fan of Pralines. Praline Pecan and Something Cheesecake in a double cone?

If you could have been the servant to any famous person in history, who would that be and why?

It most definitely depends on what “sort” of servant. I do write romance. But I suppose I’d say Shakespeare or Wagner, so that some of their talent might rub off on me. I really would love to write an Opera, but I have no idea about music. I’ll just stick to Space Opera and put the Wagner on in the background.

Blurb:
Chloe came to the Three Lakes area for the peace and quiet. She happily abandoned the world of retail management, suits and promotions to work as a hotel maid catering to the local tourists. Until Andrew Paige showed up—a suit of the worst kind, the kind that makes her knees tremble.

When Andrew offers her a job at his hotel, Chloe is hell bent on resisting, but the Dimensional Shift is no ordinary hotel, and Chloe is immediately tossed into the world of inter-dimensional tourists, their odd accommodations, and a string of thefts that threaten to ruin her chances at romance.

While learning the ropes, dealing with the Shift’s unusual guests, and trying to determine if the boss’ interest in her is strictly professional, Chloe uncovers a plot to steal the hotel’s dimensional keys. With the help of the town gossip, her alien abductee neighbor, and her new invisible best friend, Chloe confronts an inter-dimensional crime ring and a host of complications that make romancing the boss look like the least of her troubles.

Getting to know BethAnn Buehler

Why don't you start with telling us a little about yourself? What genre do you write in and why?
I'm proud to say that I'm a former teacher turned stay-at-home mom to a terrific little boy with Asperger's Syndrome, which is a very mild form of Autism.  My hubby works very hard so that I can be here raising our son.  It's the hardest job I've ever had but it's my favorite.  I started writing to carve out personal time for myself as a way to escape some of the stress in my daily life.  Without really knowing where I was headed at the time, I created a contemporary romance with strong fetish/erotic elements.  I know it sounds corny but I love "love".  I love the underdog, the person who deals with their own brokenness and finds the courage to make their life happen against the odds, whatever those might be.  That's why I write romance.  I really want the happily-ever-after.

Tell us about your current published work
I'm excited to say that Broken Together was just released by Wild Horse Press on September 14th.  Broken Together is the first in a three part series of novels featuring a small town called Rebel Canyon where readers invest in the lives of three close friends.  Bryn Baxter is hugely successful professionally but when it comes to relationships, let me just be candid--she's a mess.  When her otherwise orderly life falls apart, Bryn gets help from a hired gun, Beck Reynolds.  Bryn wants the fairy tale but she doesn't want to have to think about how to make it all work.  So Beck takes control...

Do you have any upcoming releases?
Broken Destiny, the second novel in the Rebel Canyon Series, is slated for release in February of 2011 (Wild Horse Press) and Broken Identity, the third novel, is slated for the winter of 2011.  I'm also proud to be included in a paranormal romance anthology that will be released in time for this Christmas (Wild Horse Press).  And, not to spoil anything but my anthology partners have pulled me to the dark side so my next series might indeed be something paranormal.  Imagine that!  Thanks for the milk and cookies, guys!

What inspires you to write?  Where do you get your ideas? Broken Together was born on a mountain in Utah.  I was hanging out and reading in the lodge at Deer Valley (Utah) while my husband and son were out skiing.  I took several books to read for the week since I don't ski and honestly, each one I finished left me flat.  By the end of the third day (and the fourth dissatisfying book), I ran to the gift shop, bought a notebook, refilled my hot chocolate and decided I could do better.  Hence the Utah setting for the series.
What’s the first thing you did when you received word you’d sold a book?
Well, I read and reread the email about fifteen times because I couldn't believe it.  Then I made my husband double check it just to make sure.  Then I cried and called my best friend, Sheri, who also serves as my first line editor.  She hates my spelling and my sense of timing but thank goodness she loves me!

If one of your books became a movie, which one would you like to see up on screen and who do you see playing your characters?  I see my books as movies in my brain so this one's tough.  While Broken Together is my first child so to speak and I can easily see Max Martini as the hard-edged Beck Reynolds, I think Broken Destiny is much more suited to the big screen.  The man who played Jamie Wallace in my mind when I was writing Broken Destiny was Scott Foley.  While there's no question that he could go deep enough into a hard-edged alpha male persona to pull off tough Jamie, I'd love to see if Scott could perfect the day to day softer, less confident Jamie (Rebel's favorite son), especially when my hero has those moments of self doubt.  Hey Scott--wanna give it a try?
If you could have any vice without repercussions, what would it be?  I'd own a little German sports car meant for two (the one that's made in Stuttgart) and I'd speed everywhere I went, running the occasional stop sign along the way when no-one else was around (that way no-one would get hurt).  You know those stupid stop signs that pop up in places that you can never seem to figure out why?  I hate those.   And while I'm usually never late anywhere I go, I speed because I'm always worried about being late.  I have a nice vehicle now that suits my lifestyle.  Given that it's a V6, I certainly don't putter.  Let's just say that when I bought it, I purposely didn't go for the German two seater.  They'd throw me under the jail...
What is the funniest/most embarrassing/scariest story from one of your books signings or events?  So far, using my real name has been the most frightening.  Since I'm active within our church and I'm on the PTO board at my son's school, maybe I should have considered a pen name.  I guess I was just too proud.  You know what they say about pride...

If you could have been the servant to any famous person in history, who would that be and why?  I'd take any of the founding fathers--Adams, Jefferson, Washington.  I love this country and I'm grateful that so many men leveraged everything they had when it mattered most.  They lost their lives, their families, their reputations--all for the bet of something better for everyone.  Today it seems self-interest and personal gain is king among those who "serve".  I miss the real patriots.  It would have been fun to help John Adams create the fourth of July holiday.

What so you see for the future of publishing and ebooks?
I love the touch and feel of books and honestly, I never want to live in a world without books in print--banish the thought!  In saying that, however, I understand the popularity of ebooks.  I just hope that epublishing stays pure.  By that, I mean, I hope that authors continue to put their faith and their work in the hands of publishers who have trained proofreaders and editors dedicated to assisting authors in polishing our works of art.  This next comment might upset a few folks but spell check and book layout software don't make a novel.

What is the strangest source of writing inspiration you’ve ever had?
It's probably more common than you'd think but it's all the negative stuff in my life that fuels my best writing.  My fears, dashed dreams, insecurities, screw-ups, that one failed relationship that you think back on and wonder.  Lucky for me I've got years of material to work with!

You come back from the dead as a spirit, what message are you trying to get across?
There's more than this.  More than right now.  What you do matters.  Who are you when no-one's looking matters.  What you believe in and fight for and care about on earth stays with you--it all matters.

If you were a world ruler and you were given a choice of 3 laws to enact, what would they be?
I would do away with legal red tape, especially as it pertains to lengthy, drawn out court battles and sentencing for crimes.  There'd be no fifteen year continuances if I had my way about it...  I'd make adoption a readily accessible and affordable option for all people (more legal red tape here I'm afraid) that wanted to love a child.  It saddens me that people have to fly around the world and play political games in foreign countries and spend ungodly sums of money to share love.  And, I'd revamp public education so that our teachers were back in a position of authority and our children started to hear the word "no" again in their daily lives.  A world without boundaries is a dangerous place to live.  I think for a child the word "no" is one of the best, most useful words they can hear, learn and accept.

What are your top 3 favorite paranormal books and movies?
Don't faint but I'm new to the paranormal scene.  Right now I'm happy to say that I'm reading the work of my talented colleagues--Jessica Coulter Smith, Linda Palmer, Bonnie Elliott, Tracey Mitchell, Jeanne Oiler, Ashlynn Monroe, and Lila Munro to name a few but honestly, I've just started to explore this genre so I'm playing catch-up.  And, since I'm scared of my shadow (and the dark) I'm too chicken to watch any paranormal movies!

What character (s) in any of your books is most like you?
The million dollar question--everyone wants to know if my books are about me.  I have Bryn's standoffish quality and loyalty to the people I love, and I share her hair color.  I have Casey's longing to be accepted and her heart for wanting the fairy tale.  But honestly, Rachel is the one that's starting to get to me.  When I first created her, she was someone all together different and to say she's changed as the series has grown would be a huge understatement.  Wait until you meet her in book three, then we'll have to talk.  Sadly, I don't share the "lifestyle" any of my heroines have!

What is the most ridiculous thing that you have thought about doing to any of your characters but never did?
In Broken Together, I almost maimed my heroine in a bad self-waxing accident but in the end, I decided she'd been through enough.  In Broken Destiny, there's a scene where a car wreck would be fitting but I just couldn't bring myself to crash such a cool truck.  Again in Broken Destiny there's a scene with a gun that's outrageous--oh wait--I left that one in!  Maybe in Broken Identity Rachel can revisit that waxing thing...

It's not about surviving...

It's about how you rebuild...

Broken Destiny Back Cover:
It's not about living...
When Casey Owens runs away from Nevada bad boy Mark Whitlow, she's fleeing not only one of the most powerful families in the south, but the man who just happens to be the father of her newborn son.  Tossing caution to the wind, Casey refuses to let her past get in the way of her future.  Her only focus now is Tyler, the precious little boy her ex future in-laws consider "the bastard child."  While the last thing Casey wants to do is start over, it's not about her anymore.
Jamie Wallace, Rebel Canyon's favorite cowboy, is sick of the bar scene.  Who would imagine such a successful, good-natured hunk would have so much trouble getting a date?  But when Jamie wanders off his ranch and takes one look at the helpless waif of a woman he nearly killed with his truck, he wonders if the man upstairs has finally answered his prayers.
It's about love...
Jamie can't wait to explore every inch of Casey's body and he's just as intent on winning her heart as he is on undoing her zipper.  There's just one catch.  Jamie has no idea about Casey's past.  And when he sees the scars that mark her body, he loses more than just his nerve in the bedroom.  With unseen forces working against them, Casey's resolve will be tested by a man whose kind of love leaves bruises while Jamie's heart will be torn between bending Casey over the tailgate of his truck and changing dirty diapers.
Offering Casey nothing more than himself, Jamie can only hope that one day Casey will grow to love him in return.  But will he ever be able to love another man's son?
