Reducing Obesity Should Not Mean an Attack on the Elderly

Doctors call for a new attack on obesity. They are calling for more lap band surgery. Of course that will put more money in their pockets. New funding in maternal health is an objective. How can this impact on obesity? Getting new mothers to eat better does not really affect the diet of children. Funding for more beds is another "wishy-washy" idea which has no direct link to reducing obesity.

Banning take away food would mean that hospital cafes would not be able to sell fried chips. Can you imagine only sandwiches on offer? The eateries would not be in business for long. How is this going to be policed? Are they going to check on people all around the building at lunchtime to check on what they are eating? For example, what if a nurse brings a hamburger to work and reheats it in a microwave?

Look around and see what is the "norm" in society. half of women and there quarters if men are overweight. A government that bans take away food faces losing office at the next election. Treating obesity in other ways is also doomed to failure: dietitians are deemed to be in the category of psychologists (get a real job). Even offering free lap band surgery does not mean success. The majority would not choose to have such a dangerous operation.

Freeing up hospital beds for obese people by sending the elderly home makes one wonder if doctors putting forward such ridiculous ideas actually live in a dog kennel. They are surely not in the real world. There is a shortage of aged care places because there is not enough profit in the industry to draw investment. Unless government, thus taxpayers, pay more the aged and infirm will have to stay in hospitals.

Greens Say Too Much for Their Size

The Greens want the fame without playing the game. In the recent Government attempt to introduce a Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme the Greens voted down the new legislation because they wanted more. The Labor Government didn't have the tax high enough. Now the Greens are saying they want a carbon tax of $20 a ton. If they had supported Labor they would have been somewhat on the way towards this. But no, they chose to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Note, the $20 a ton is only to be an interim measure. They are in gaga land. The Australian people and business cannot afford such a high tax.

Compensating some sectors of society is completely ruled out by the Greens. What about people on low fixed incomes like the elderly who worked before compulsory superannuation and have to live on the meagre government pension, or single parent families? This is too tough for the Greens. The Greens are in the position of all minor parties - they never have to pay the price of actually being in government. Hard things must be done and voters remember this. The Family First Senator is a case in point. He has the real balance of power when the Coalition votes en bloc against legislation. He talks a lot a rot and Labor has to give him what he wants, no matter how trivial, to get legislation through.

The Greens can huff and puff as much as they like. People aren't really listening. Voters know they talk a lot of idealistic clap-trap. Whatever the Government does they have something to say to knock it. This is to be expected from a loyal opposition like the Coalition. From minor parties, however, it is just an irritation.

Greens Groups Are Causing Divison Among Aboriginals Over NW Project

The Greenies and Aboriginals are at odds with each other. While Aboriginals are trying to get a share of the mineral boom, Greenies want to end it. A case in point is Broome in Western Australia where the WA Premier has said that if Aboriginals don't agree to what has been offered the state will allow development anyway. Greenies have responded to this with abuse of parliamentarians and lying about the consequences.

Save the Kimberley environmental groups and Wilderness Society have caused so much trouble that Aboriginal families are arguing with each other. Aboriginals want job creation. Greenies are not interested in more jobs. Greenies have even accused Aboriginals of being in league with developers.

Coming in and throwing your weight around to get what you want is not the way to go. Greenies carry a lot of weight and they are damaging Aboriginal communities by pretending to help native people. Greenies are trying to stop the gas hub at all costs and the cost could ultimately be met by Aboriginals who loose out on everything if they don't sign on the line.

Green groups are blaming the state and federal governments for causing division among Aboriginals when it is Greenies who are causing it.

Schools Charge for "Free" Computers

When schools got new computers for their student the last thing you think would happen would be school charging a fee to use them. But this is what has occurred. What are the schools thinking of? A public school is asking parents to buy the computers for $1200. Another is trying to lease them for $1400. It boils down to a technicality. Schools are saying computers must be left at school. There will a charge if they want to take them home.

The ridiculous thing is after paying for a computer a student will still not actually own it. Computers will have to be taken back for use by other students. What a rip off. Over Years 9 to 12 a school will receive $1460. A good laptop can be purchased for $795 anywhere.

Just what is the Federal Government thinking of? It says schools can charge if they want to. Surely this negates the free computer promise. It wasn't voted in to do this. Education Minister Julia Gillard says Schools can arrange for home use as they see fit. The Government should have said providing computers was just a way of giving schools more funding because that is what has happened. Again children from poorer families lose out. It has brought further inequity with some states not charging.

The Labor Government is obviously in league with schools. It is trying to force parents to buy computers by making rental extremely high, so the Government will meet its target of every child having a computer by default.
